Blackbaud Solutions Improve Operational Efficiency, Financial Administration, and Ticketing Capabilities at The Field Museum

The Field Museum, founded in 1893, is one of the world’s premier natural history museums. It houses more than 24 million specimens and is located in Chicago, Illinois. The museum is a major center for scientific research, with more than 200 scientists working in more than 64 countries in anthropology, botany, conservation, cultural understanding, geology, and zoology. The Field Museum hosts 1.3 million visitors each year at its permanent and temporary exhibitions, such as Chocolate: The Exhibition, and Nature Unleashed: Inside Natural Disasters.

The Challenge:
When The Field Museum in Chicago was faced with a costly and time-consuming conversion of its legacy software system, a team made up of the Museum’s staff researched several solutions to improve operational efficiency, financial administration and ticketing capabilities. The staff wanted a flexible technology platform with real-time reporting capabilities.

The Solution:
The Field Museum had been using Blackbaud’s The Raiser’s Edge since 1990 for fundraising management. Pleased with the level of support and technology performance, the Museum chose to expand its relationship with Blackbaud to include The Patron Edge for ticketing and The Financial Edge for financial management.

The Results:
Blackbaud solutions have enabled several departments within The Field Museum to work more closely together and individually improve the management of their workload. For example, the Public Services department can now access complex data for better analysis as well create a faster check-in for its visitors. Now, during the Museum’s busiest days, transaction times have decreased from five minutes to less than 30 seconds. In addition, the finance department now has direct access to several departments’ data, aiding in all its financial reporting. The new system is also decreasing the time spent doing data entry and increasing the time spent doing involved analysis.
